What is in My Bag - for Fashion Photography in NYC

What is in My Bag - for Fashion Photography in NYC by popular NYC photographer, Laurel Creative

Hi everybody!

I’m in NYC every day of the work week, shooting bloggers and clients, and carrying all my fashion photography equipment on my back! “What’s in my bag?” is a common question that I get!

Wedding photography is a little bit different and there will be a blog for that a little later down the road! But this one gives you alllll the info about what I carry on my back every single day. My camera, lenses, and even what kind of (amazing!) backpack holds it together every day. Keep on reading to find out my daily fashion photography shooting essentials!

MY FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT

My lenses

As a fashion photographer, shooting bloggers on the streets of NYC, the lens that doesn't leave my camera is the Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART lens. It's so versatile! Wide enough for grand street shots, but also works well for portraits, and provides amazing bokeh, (blurry background) that my clients all request.

It is definitely a lens that is worth the investment and does it’s job very well. It is my FAVORITE lens I’ve ever owned.

My Camera Body is incredible!

I have been through quite an array of camera bodies since purchasing my first one in 2010, and currently I am shooting/and loving the Nikon d4s.  It's extremely quick - around 10 frames per second! If you’ve ever seen me work, I seriously work that camera to death. Holding my finger on the shutter, I ensure that I get the perfect shot of my client crossing the street, or every single frame, when shooting a client jumping or running.

Saving my photos

I love to use high capacity CF cards. (Most cameras take SD cards which are a little larger than a quarter. My camera’s file size are so large that the memory cards I use are around the size of an Oreo. I currently carry 8 of those with me, each holding 64 GB - that is roughly 1,500 photos! To put things in perspective: With ONE fashion shoot lasting one hour, and three outfits, I will fill one memory card. That’s A LOT of photos

With so much shooting you’d think I’d need lots of batteries! Surprisingly, the Lithium Ion battery included with my Nikon d4s is extremely powerful. Usually, I can shoot for around 5 hours on one battery charge. So on a normal day, I carry two just to be safe!

My backpack is my lifesaver.

I get asked all the time what backpack I use. It’s the Pacsafe Camsafe! It is a bit pricey- but TOTALLY worth it. There is a padded slot for the camera, a backpack area for lenses and things, and also a laptop sleeve. And every zipper has a "lock" on it. It’s very safe!

I love my fashion photography equipment, but every photographer is different, and everyone works in their own way, so find what works for you!
